This dates the article more than anything else, I think. The ultrasonic remotes were the first kind of wireless remote controls and they seemed like real luxury as they worked without actually being plugged in. However, many of us discovered that TVs with ultra-sonic remotes would change channels at random if, for example, you shook a bunch of keys near them!
Ultra-sonic remotes weren't chic for very long. Within 18 months or so they were consigned to history, along with LED digital watches, by the infra-red system we use today.
